Gentle & Safe Dental Sedation for Kids

Because your child’s comfort and safety always come first.

At Speedway Pediatric Dentistry, we understand that the dental chair can feel overwhelming for children especially those undergoing multiple treatments or who are naturally more anxious. That’s why we offer safe and compassionate dental sedation options to ensure every child receives the care they need in a calm, stress-free environment.

Whether your child has mild anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still, or more extensive treatment needs, we tailor our approach to ensure their safety, comfort, and emotional well-being.

Why Dental Sedation May Be Recommended

It’s completely normal for children (and even adults!) to feel nervous about dental procedures. Sedation can help in many situations, such as:

Sedation doesn’t mean your child will be “put to sleep” unless general anesthesia is used. Often, it simply helps them feel relaxed, less fearful, and more cooperative during treatment.

Our priority is to protect your child’s physical safety and their emotional experience—because positive visits today build lifelong confidence in dental care.

Sedation with Safety First

When any form of sedation is used, your child will be closely monitored before, during, and after the procedure. We’ll always discuss your child’s health history, treatment needs, and comfort level before recommending a sedation method.

Dr. Wiley is credentialed at St. Vincent Hospital and Carmel Ambulatory Surgery Center and is very experienced in treatment under surgical conditions. You can trust that your child is in expert hands with a team that values gentle care and clinical precision.

Types of Sedation

Nitrous oxide is a safe, odorless gas mixed with oxygen that helps children relax and feel at ease during treatment. It can reduce anxiety, provide mild numbing effects, and make the experience more pleasant. Best of all, the effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed.

Why we love it:

  • Works quickly

  • Adjustable during treatment

  • Wears off completely before your child leaves

  • Ideal for mild anxiety or shorter procedures

This involves giving your child an oral sedative before the appointment, allowing them to remain drowsy but responsive. It’s ideal for longer procedures or when nitrous oxide alone isn’t enough.

Oral sedation is often used alongside nitrous oxide to keep children calm while maintaining a level of alertness that allows for cooperation.

General anesthesia is used when a child needs extensive dental treatment or is unable to safely cooperate due to age, medical conditions, or developmental concerns. This option is provided in a hospital or surgical center setting under the care of a licensed anesthesiologist.

  • The child is completely asleep

  • Treatment is completed efficiently and safely

  • Ideal for full-mouth rehabilitation

  • Protects a child’s psychological well-being when office treatment isn’t appropriate

What to Expect After Sedation

After your child’s procedure, you’ll be by their side as they wake up. It’s normal for children to feel:

  • Sleepy or groggy

  • Upset or fussy

  • Dizzy or nauseous

  • Have a sore throat or nose (especially after general anesthesia)

These effects are temporary and typically wear off within a few hours. We’ll give you clear post-care instructions and stay available if you have any concerns.
